Why The Whole30 Works

A dietary and lifestyle reset

It takes just 30 days to push the reset button on your health and change your entire relationship with food. This is the driving concept behind Melissa and Dallas Hartwig’s Whole30 program.

By eating non-processed whole foods and ditching grains, dairy, and sugar, you can reduce inflammation in your system, clear up your skin, and revitalize your energy stores. It sounds simple enough, but what’s going on behind the scenes?

It takes just 30 days to push the reset button on your health and change your entire relationship with food. This is the driving concept behind Melissa and Dallas Hartwig’s Whole30 program.

By eating non-processed whole foods and ditching grains, dairy, and sugar, you can reduce inflammation in your system, clear up your skin, and revitalize your energy stores. It sounds simple enough, but what’s going on behind the scenes?

Inflammatory Vs. Whole Ingredients

Inflamma-what?

Inflammatory foods are those which trigger an immune response within your body. When your system doesn’t recognize or know how to process a food, it labels it a harmful substance-an “invader”-that must be eliminated. In response, white blood cells release chemicals that increase blood flow and can cause uncomfortable swelling. When responding this way to part of your routine diet, your body can enter a state of chronic inflammation, which can lead to a variety of other health issues.

How can the Whole30 help with inflammation?

Most people who follow a Whole30 diet discover that, upon reintroduction, some of these foods cause stomach upset, body aches, headaches, fatigue, rashes, or other irritating symptoms.

Once the 30 days are up, you begin to reintroduce off-plan foods one at a time. Much like an elimination diet to detect allergies or sensitivities, you’ll develop a clearer picture of what your body likes and doesn’t like during this reintroduction phase.

The Four Good Food Standards

The Whole30 plan is full of nutrient-dense foods, including protein, vegetables, fruits, and healthy fats. The program is based on research concerning how different nutrients can affect the body. Foods allowed on the plan must meet four “Good Food” standards.

The food we eat should:

  1. Promote a healthy psychological response.
  2. Promote a healthy hormonal response.
  3. Support a healthy gut.
  4. Support immune functions and minimize inflammation.

NOT YOUR TYPICAL ELIMINATION DIET

What Makes Whole30 Different

Elimination diets aren’t a new concept. In fact, they’ve been used in clinical settings to diagnose or treat food sensitivities, allergies, and digestive problems for decades. Whole30 takes a different approach to an elimination diet in that the goal isn’t just to cut out certain foods-it’s also designed to change your relationship to what and how you eat. For the process to work, it must be followed to the letter for 30 days. According to Hartwig, a simple slip up “could break the healing cycle” and send you back to day one. So to get any realistic results, it’s a full 30 days of complete unwavering commitment to the diet.  Whole30 focuses on the psychological aspects of food and encourages people to change how they think and relate to what’s on their plate, which is why it’s off limits to eat a pancake even if it’s made of coconut flour.

The Whole30 can…

  • Eliminate unhealthy cravings

  • Balance hormones

  • Heal digestive tract lining

  • Restore a healthy metabolism

  • Reduce systemic inflammation

  • Understand how certain foods impact your mood and appearance

Most people report improved physical, mental, and emotional health on this plan. As an elimination diet, Whole30 allows you to identify foods that may trigger allergies or sensitivities through a clinical, time-honored approach. Nutrition experts agree on the benefits of removing added sugars and processed foods from our diet as Whole30 recommends.

While more restrictive than other diets like Paleo or Mediterranean, Whole30 is well worth the effort it leads to reduced inflammation, a healthier metabolism, hormonal balance, a happy gut, clearer skin, and improved energy!
